How we quote hire

Three numbers, given together: the weekly rate, the cartage in and the cartage out. Quoting the weekly rate on its own is the industry's favourite trick and it is how a cheap-looking hire turns into an expensive one on a short job.

On anything under about two months the cartage both ways is usually the larger part of the total. That is not a reason not to hire — it is a reason to know the whole figure before you sign anything, and to compare it honestly against buying a used unit and selling it afterwards.

What does container hire actually cost?
20ft hire starts from $27 a week ex GST, plus cartage in and cartage out. We quote all three together rather than the headline weekly rate, because a project manager needs the whole cost and not the attractive part of it.
Is there a minimum hire period?
Usually, and it varies with the unit and where it is going. Ring with the rough duration and the address and you will get the terms with the price rather than after it. For anything under a couple of months the cartage both ways is normally the larger part of the cost, which is worth knowing before you decide between hire and purchase.
When is hiring better than buying?
When the job has a defined end inside about a year, and when the container is going somewhere it will have to leave. Site storage on a fixed-term contract, a compliance schedule, a renovation with a settlement date. If the timeframe is open-ended or the box will still be useful afterwards, buying is generally cheaper and you can sell it later.
Can I hire a bunded chemical or fuel store?
Yes, and it is common on contract work where the compliance schedule specifies it before anyone turns a sod. Tell us the classes, the quantities and the duration. The unit is built and signed to suit the classes you nominate; the storage obligation stays with you.
What if I want to buy it at the end?
Ask at the start rather than at the end. Depending on the unit and how long it has been out, there is often a sensible way to do it, and it is much easier to arrange before the hire agreement is written than after.
