Grades matter
Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it goes on a truck. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — one may have a patched repair, a soft floor section or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with it before you buy. New single-trip units are sealed and unmarked. If the container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Same footprint, roughly 300mm more headroom. The extra height changes what a container is useful for far more than the number suggests.

What is going inside?That decides the size far more reliably than a dimension table does. A three-bedroom house is a 20ft. A shed and a mower is a 10ft. A farm's worth of machinery and fodder is a 40ft or two 20fts.
Does it have to stay dry?If yes, cargo-worthy or better. Every cargo-worthy unit is checked wind and watertight before it goes on a truck. If the contents genuinely do not care about weather, as-is is honest value and we will tell you what is wrong with the specific unit first.
Will it ever be lined?If there is any chance of it, buy a high cube now. A lined standard container finishes at about 2.2 metres of headroom and feels like a corridor; a lined high cube finishes near 2.5 metres and feels like a room.
Describe what is going in it and where it is going. That is a five minute conversation and it is how people avoid buying the wrong box.
